New independent report shows gas is lowest carbon and cleanest fuel option for heavy goods vehicles

An Element Energy report for Cadent on the first 14 months operation of the UK’s first high pressure grid connected gas filling shows that compressed natural gas (CNG) made from gas in high pressure pipelines should be the fuel of choice for HGVs.

John Baldwin, managing director of CNG Services Ltd, who designed and built the station in conjunction with station owner CNG Fuels Ltd, said:

“This is the first time in Europe that we have real world information on the performance of dedicated gas HGVs UK running on CNG.  The Scania CNG trucks are exceptionally good for air quality with less than half the NOX and Particulates of the cleanest diesel, but this report shows 15% reduction in GHG (greenhouse gas) on top of air quality benefits.  And if you are using biomethane made from waste, then a massive 84% GHG saving over diesel.”

“We expect the 15% GHG saving to increase to 25% as more efficient gas engines and associated drive-trains come into service as the Scania is the first generation CNG truck.  Testing has also found there is no methane slip through the engine, which is excellent news.”

CNG Fuels’ Leyland CNG (compressed natural gas) filling station was monitored for over a year, during which it dispensed 1,028 tonnes of gas, by energy consultancy Element Energy for gas network owner Cadent to benchmark its environmental and economic parameters,

Opened in 2016, the filling station is just off junction 28 of the M6, near Leyland, Lancashire and home to Waitrose’s new fleet of Scania CNG lorries using twin carbon fibre tanks which have a range of up to 500 miles.

CSL managed the design and build of the CNG station, the first of its kind in the UK that allows vehicles to fill up on CNG made directly from the high-pressure local transmission system.
