Pipelines

Our dedicated team for above and below 7 bar pipelines and associated pipework work on a variety of projects including, but not limited to, biomethane injection pipelines, Bio-CNG filling stations and back up gas fired power generation sites. We work on projects that involve the design, installation, testing and commissioning of assets for gas networks, as well as private assets owned by third parties.

Projects are followed through to full completion and involve all stages of the pipeline lifecycle, including but not limited to:

  • Feasibility Studies
  • Environmental Statements
  • Conceptual Design
  • Detailed Design
  • Construction
  • Testing
  • Commissioning
  • Asset handover
  • Maintenance and operational duties

We also take on pipeline duty holder responsibilities for selected pipelines and can provide services to ensure private pipelines are in full compliance with HSE guidelines and GS(M)R, PSR and PSSR requirements.

In the period since 2014 we have constructed over 40 below 7bar projects and over 30 above 7bar projects adopted by Gas Network Operators (GNOs) and private pipeline operators, including connecting to the Local Transmission (LTS) and National Transmission Systems (NTS) as well as the below 7bar Intermediate Pressure (IP), Medium (MP) and Low Pressure (LP) networks.

Below 7 bar pipelines

CNG Services’ below 7 bar team manages the design and construction of all connecting pipelines required to Gas Network Operator (GNO) LP/MP and IP gas networks. This includes the design and construction of connections and pipelines for GNO adoption under the Gas Industry Registration Scheme (GIRS) as well as facilities for adoption by private network operators. CNG Services is registered under GIRS for Design and Project Management and we always use GIRS registered subcontractors for pipework installation.

Connections to the below 7 bar networks are a good first option as the installation costs are significantly lower and the design timelines shorter than for high-pressure connections. In cases where the below 7bar network is limited in offtake or entry capacity, we can offer the option of connection to a higher pressure network through the above 7 bar pipelines team.

Above 7 bar pipelines

Above 7 bar team manage the design and construction of all connecting pipelines required to Gas Network Operator (GNO) NTS and LTS high-pressure gas transmission networks. This includes the design and construction of connections and pipelines for GNO adoption under the GNO self-lay process. CNG Services has been audited and registered with DNVGL as an above 7 bar G17 Design Organisation meeting the same requirements as GNO framework design organisations and we use GNO framework subcontractors for construction. High-pressure connections provide the benefit of better entry and entry network capacity and also reduced compression costs where higher pressures are required for CNG usage.

LTS Projects

CNG Services Ltd. have a completed over 30 Local Transmission System (LTS) pipelines and connections, covering biomethane injection pipelines, Bio-CNG filling stations for HGVs and power generation sites. These projects span across various gas networks operating in the UK and we have successfully designed, installed and commissioned high pressure assets that have been adopted by major network providers and private pipeline operators.

We will normally offer the connection and pipeline works under a self lay process where CNG Services manages the design and construction of the assets for the network operator to adopt. This provides the customer with a more competitive quote, improved timelines and greater transparency.  We also provide a design and construction service for the client’s interconnecting high pressure pipework which enables better efficiency for the whole connection process. We are always keen to use innovation to improve the efficiency of our connections process.

Some of our key innovation LTS projects include:

  • Holkham Biomethane Injection – First LTS Biomethane connection and the first to use a network self lay process where CNG Services managed the design and construction of the LTS connection and entry facilities including an ROV and RTU
  • Leyland Bio-CNG filling station – First UK LTS Bio-CNG Filling Station connection
  • Raynham Farms Biomethane Injection – First UK LTS project using Reinforced Thermoplastic (RTP) for high pressure gas transmission with a 1.5 km connecting pipeline constructed

For private pipelines we can also develop Safety Cases and Major Accident Prevention Documents (MAPD) in compliance with the Gas Safety Management Regulations (GSMR) and Pipeline Safety Regulations (PSR) as well as inspection regimes for compliance with the Pressure System Safety Regulations (PSSR).  We can also offer a pipeline operator service to manage the 24/7 operation of private pipelines including all maintenance, inspection and emergency arrangements.

NTS Projects

Using the experience from our self lay LTS projects, CNG Services has worked with National Grid Gas (NGG) to deliver the first National Transmission System (NTS) self lay connection projects in the UK. During the process and working with NGG we were able to deliver a simplified exit connection design without the need for an ROV. This enabled a more cost effective connection and improved construction timeline.

As with LTS projects we will offer future NTS connection works under a self lay process providing customers with a more competitive quote, improved timelines and greater transparency.  We also provide a design and construction service for the client’s interconnecting NTS rated high pressure pipework enabling better efficiency for the whole connection process.

Key innovation NTS projects include:

  • Fordoun CNG mother station – We completed the first NTS self lay exit connection project at Fordoun, Scotland, supplying high pressure natural gas to a CNG Mother Station on the client’s site, which then compresses the gas up to 250 bar and transports it to distilleries in Scotland. The project involved design and construction of the NGG connection assets at an existing NTS block valve and a 1km private pipeline to the CNG station site for which CNG Services is the pipeline operator under a Safety Case exemption. CNG Services also designed and constructed the mother station and a number of daughter stations for decanting from the CNG trailers to supply remote distilleries in Scotland
  • Somerset Farm Biomethane Injection – This was the first Biomethane Injection into the NTS system. For this project we carried out the design and construction of a 1 km private pipeline and on site high pressure connecting pipework. NGG carried out the NTS connection under their first project CLOCC trial and we managed the golden weld tie in works to the NGG pipework. CNG Services is also the private pipeline operator under a full Safety Case
  • Theddlethorpe – This project involves the installation of the first high pressure RTP gas pipeline at NTS pressure in the UK, using Soluforce RTP, resulting in significant cost and time savings for the client compared to an all steel system. The pipeline is designed to inject gas from an existing onshore gas field into the NGG NTS system
